Information for Visitors

Accessing the Student Network

Visitors wishing to use PCs located in the areas listed below, must login using a temporary Active Directory (AD) account provided by the University for this purpose (see below).
  Student workstations in IT laboratories and LRCs
  Video-conference Suite PCs
  Teaching Room PCs

Please note that visitors who require access to the above areas over a prolonged period of time must apply for an 'Associate' account (see below).

What is a Visitor or an Associate?

What defines a... Visitor Associate
  A person, external to the University, that is:
  • invited to work (short-term)on a University project or
  • an attendee at a conference held on a University campus or
  • a temporary lecturer or
  • student at another university
A person, external to the University, that is
  • working in a University office or
  • working on a University project or
  • a temporary lecturer or
  • emeritus staff or
  • from an agency or 3rd party company
  • a chaplain
  • someone who requires a University of Ulster email address
  for a definite period of time. and for an undefined period.
What type of account will you receive? Visitors receive Vcodes, for which there is a fixed time limit that is  normally specified at the outset. Associates receive Acodes. These will be deleted when the person's formal association with the University is terminated.
What will this account entitle you to? Visitors will be provided with access to the student network and wireless systems to avail of email and the internet. In addition to standard email and internet access, Associates of the University will be provided with a standard University of Ulster email address. They may also be provided with access to any relevant corporate services.
How may I request an account? As a visitor, you must be sponsored by an employee at the University. If you wish to proceed with your request (or you are a sponsor of a Visitor), please click here for further information. Associates must also be sponsored by a University employee. A member of University staff who wishes to sponsor an Associate should click here to initiate the request.

Obtaining your Active Directory Account Information

Visitors and Associates Active Directory accounts have been created for all Visitors and Associates at the University. The usercode will be sent to your personal email address (if you have supplied one). If no personal email address was provided, please contact the Information Point in the LRC on your campus.

 

Logging in to the Network

The login procedure for Visitors is the same within the LRCs, IT laboratories, teaching rooms and video-conference suites.

At the Windows login screen (shown opposite), enter your Vcode (or Acode) and AD password in the appropriate fields.

Then use the drop-down list for 'log on to' and select the AD option.

Press the OK button to complete the process.

   

Shared Data Areas

All data required for teaching within the student IT laboratories will be hosted via WebCT. No shared data areas will be available within the student network. Academic staff who have hosted data in the Shared Data Areas in the past are advised to contact the WebCT team to discuss their requirements.

Student Filestore

Students have been allocated 25 Gb of disk space on the Skydrive element of the new Live@edu service provided by Microsoft. Important files can be saved and accessed from any PC connected to the internet or via a ‘Useful Web Links’ icon on the student desktop. Students access the service using their University email address and Live@edu password.

All requests for software installations in our IT laboratories must be in accordance with the procedure outlined here.
