Student Network
Information for Students

Accessing the Student Network

Students wishing to use PCs located in the IT laboratories and LRCs must login using their own Student ID and network password (see below). Security measures have been incorporated within our systems to prevent unauthorised entry.

Your Student Network Account

What information do I need to use the student PCs? You may access PCs in the IT laboratories and Learning Resource Centres by logging in using two pieces of information:

1. your Student ID number
2. your student network password

All students will receive a new Student ID and initial network password at enrolment.

How do I obtain the initial network password? There are at least two ways to do this:

If you are on campus, there are dedicated PCs, known as Password Kiosks, that are normally located close to the Information Points within the LRCs.  You will need your Student ID Number and PIN to login to the Password Kiosk. Once in, select the option to obtain your initial network password.

If you are off-campus (i.e. at home) the information is available from the View Personal Information page within the Banner Self Service system. Again, you will need to log in with your Student ID and PIN and then select the appropriate option.

Where Can I Use the PCs?

Information Services is responsible for over 20 IT laboratories (and over 1500 student PCs) throughout the University. Student PCs are also available within the new LRCs on each campus. Windows XP is the standard operating system on all student PCs. Further information is published on our Campus Facilities page.

Logging in to the Network

The login procedure for students is the same within the LRCs and IT laboratories on every campus. If you are visiting a campus, other than the one at which you are based normally, you can still login and use the PCs there.

At the Windows login screen (shown here), enter your student ID number and network password in the appropriate fields.

Press the OK button to complete the process.

Logging in for the first time At the first login, you will not be prompted to change your password (although we strongly recommend that you do so).

The Common Desktop Environment (CDE)

Every PC supported by ICTCS has a standard desktop known as the Common Desktop Environment (or CDE). A core set of applications is provided which includes:

Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access)
Internet Explorer web browser
Statistical software such as SPSS

Additional applications, specific to courses provided by certain faculties (in specific laboratories) are available directly from the Start button. The desktop has been tailored to provide the best possible environment to students. Some Windows features have been restricted to ensure service provision. Further information is published on the Software page of this website.

Password Issues

If you encounter a problem with your student network password, you should visit the Password Kiosk in the LRC (see above) in the first instance.

Login (using your Student ID and PIN)
select the option to change your network password.
Then go to a student PC and try to login again using the new password.

If this does not work, please seek assistance from our staff at the Information Point.

Printing

A high quality, high speed laser printing service is available in PC laboratories and LRCs throughout the University. Printers are accessed using a card system. Cards can be obtained from wall-mounted dispensers. Information on the location of card dispensers and revaluers for credits can be found our Campus Facilities page. For details of the colour printing facilities, please contact the LRC Information Point on your campus.

Your Email

The University, in co-operation with Microsoft, provides a web-based email service (known as Live@edu) to all students. All student workstations will have a desktop shortcut entitled ‘Useful Web Links’. This will contain a direct link to the Live@edu service. If you are accessing your email from outside the University, you can do this via the the web address below.

Further information on Live@edu can be found on our website at:

www.ulster.ac.uk/isd/itus/live@edu/

Your Data

Student Filestore: SkyDrive

You have been allocated 25 Gb of disk space on the Skydrive element of the new Live@edu service provided by Microsoft. Important files can be uploaded or downloaded from any PC connected to the internet or via a ‘Useful Web Links’ icon on the student desktop. You  access the service using your University email address and Live@edu password.

Further information on Live@edu can be found on our website at:

 www.ulster.ac.uk/isd/itus/live@edu/

It is best practice not to edit documents live within the Skydrive environment. They should be downloaded first to a local area (e.g. My Documents) or a USB Flash Drive, edited then saved, and the revised version uploaded to Skydrive.

Shared Data

Any data that is required by your lecturer for classes within the student IT laboratories will be hosted via WebCT. No shared data areas are available within the student network. Your lecturer will direct you to the relevant location on the WebCT environment.
