Service Name

Allocate Fixed IP Address

Service Description
(including technical
requirements/Specifications)

IP addresses are used to uniquely identify computers on a network. Every computer or networked device must use a different network address. Within the University DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is used to automatically allocate IP addresses to connected computers and network devices.  Due to the nature of how DHCP works some devices may get a different IP address each time they connect to the network. For most PC users this is not an issue. However for appliances which provide a service, for example web servers, printers etc. a fixed IP address should be used instead of DHCP. This will ensure that the service uses the same contactable IP address all the time.  If you are providing a service that requires the use of a fixed IP address you can request a fixed IP address via the Service Desk
