Materials received in the Archive to 31 July 2003 University
material A large amount of material has come to the Archive from within the University in response to the setting up of the Archive, although prior to the adoption of the Retention and Disposal Schedule this material did not come in any systematic manner. Now that the Schedule has been adopted the Archivist will liaise with Faculties and Administrative Departments to ensure its implementation across the University. It is clear that the proper listing, cataloguing, sifting of duplicates and, indeed, identification of material for disposal under the terms of the Schedule will take up a large part of the Archivist’s work for the foreseeable future. The major categories of
material received from inside the University are:
Cavehill store: approximately
70 linear metres of Lever arch files, box files and folders and a full
filing cabinet had to be moved into the Archive from the Cavehill
Building at Coleraine, where the material was at risk from vandalism
and from unsuitable storage conditions. The bulk of the material
consists of University committee papers. The filing cabinet contains
some internal documents relating to the Chilver Report and the Merger
period. The
Research Office has made several
deposits, amounting to some 80 archive boxes of individual research
applications, material relating to contracts, and contacts with
business etc. The
Department of Information Services has made
two substantial deposits, one of 12 archive boxes of papers including
correspondence, conference material, personnel files, day files etc.
The other deposit consists of 8 archive boxes of similar material from
the former Department of Educational Services. The
Press Office made a large deposit of
press cuttings, including a substantial amount relating to the Ulster
Polytechnic, which will complement the NUU material already held.
