BELFAST is the capital city of Northern Ireland and seat of the province's devolved government. With a population of just under a third of a million, Belfast is part of a greater urban area of nearly half a million people.
The city rose to prominence in the 19th Century as the centre for the Irish linen industry, tobacco production, rope-making and shipbuilding, which made it briefly the largest city in Ireland at the beginning of the 20th Century.
During the latter half of the 20th Century the city endured nearly 30 years of serious disruption, conflict and destruction widely known as "the troubles". Latterly, however, a peace has been brokered and the city has enjoyed a sustained period of calm and regeneration with substantial economic and commercial growth. Today, Belfast remains a centre for engineering and industry, as well as the arts, higher education and business .
Situated on the shores of Belfast Lough and surrounded by hills, Belfast is a city with many attractions such as museums, historic monuments, bars, restaurants, music and theatre, nature walks and industrial heritage.
