International students

The University is a modern dynamic institution with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. We welcome International Students from all around the world and we are delighted that you have chosen to study here at Ulster.

We have a cosmopolitan and diverse community at the University, currently home to students from more than 80 countries. Our students enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere here, providing the perfect opportunity to make new friends from across the world.

Studying and living in a different country brings enormous opportunities and benefits but also some new challenges. In order to settle in and make the most of your experience at Ulster you need the right information and guidance to take advantage of all possible opportunities.

The friendly and supportive International Student Experience staff in the International Department at the University are here to help you in order to make your stay at Ulster as beneficial and enjoyable as possible. The University also provides a comprehensive network of student support, including the following:

  • Pre-sessional (before the beginning of the academic semester) and in-sessional (during the academic semester) English language courses and support are offered to help international students improve their English language skills. These courses are provided through the Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT).
  • If your course of study is for six months or more, you will qualify for treatment through the National Health Service (NHS) from the beginning of your stay, on the same basis as anyone who is ordinarily resident in the UK.
  • The Students’ Union runs many sports clubs and societies and all students are most welcome to join.
  • The Careers Development Centre (CDC) is available to all students and can help you identify opportunities to enhance your career prospects.
  • Student Support is available to provide guidance on support available for students with disabilities and medical conditions as well as providing practical advice and emotional support for any students who feel stressed or anxious while studying.  Our services are confidiential and free for all Ulster students and details are on our Student Support website.

The International Department can provide you with immigration help and support, together with general advice and guidance. We can also assist with the renewal of your student visa should you wish to extend your studies.

Ulster University is a Tier IV Sponsor and is required by law, to monitor the attendance of all international students studying on a Tier 4 student visa.
