The University operates an Elite Athlete scheme which recognises the sacrifices in terms of time, effort and crucially - in examination performance - which may result from the persuit of a sport to its highest levels of competition. In addition, the scheme demonstrates the important sporting ethos which the University of Ulster espouses. The Elite Athlete scheme enables the University to accept lower academic entrance requirements than normal for entry to all its full-time undergraduate courses.

Applicants to the University's courses may also make application for consideration as an "Elite Athlete". If the University confirms this status, then a "discounted" offer will be made. The criteria for defining an athlete as "elite" take into consideration such things as the level of representation in the particular sport, the future potential of the athlete/sportsperson and their willingness to represent their sport on behalf of the University of Ulster.

The application procedure is by way of a separate Elite Athlete Application Form which may be submitted after the UCAS application (with reference to the UCAS application number, courses applied for, etc.). Whilst the Elite Athlete application may be submitted at the same time as the UCAS application, it is not recommended that it is attached or appended to the UCAS form. The Elite Athlete application form should thus be submitted separately and this will be acknowledged by the University.

Applicants are likely to be asked to submit evidence in support of their application.

Successful applicants will be advised accordingly and will receive an offer that will include lower entrance requirements (in terms of grades) than the standard offer for the course. (Please note that this reduction relates only to University of Ulster courses and in addition cannot result in any offer falling below the University's minimum general threshold for that level of course). The reduction in entrance requirements will be applied across the applicant's profile of subjects and for 2004 entry will be 60 UCAS Tariff Points or the equivalent in other qualifications.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING EXCEPTIONS

From 2004 entry, applicants to the BSc Hons Physiotherapy, BSc Hons Speech and Language Therapy and BSc Hons Occupational Therapy will receive a reduction of 40 UCAS Tariff Points or the equivalent in other qualifications.

Applicants will receive reduced offers for all University of Ulster courses for which they have applied.

If an applicant has already received an offer through UCAS from the University of Ulster before receiving confirmation that his/her Elite Athlete application has been successful, an amended offer (with reduced requirements) will subsequently be processed through UCAS.

Those applicants who are unsuccessful in their Elite Athlete application, will also be notified accordingly but still considered for an offer using the standard entrance criteria for the course(s).

If you require further information on the criteria to be used in the determination of Elite Athlete status, please contact Dr Nigel Dobson, Head of Services, Sport and Recreation 028 9036 8216.

For clarification of the administrative procedures only please contact Dr Tony Barnhill, Head of Student Recruitment at 028 7032 4516.
