One of the highlights of last month’s first ever Digital Advertising Northern Ireland (DANI) awards was the You Tube video of the Belfast Giants’ rendition of the Mariah Carey hit, ‘All I want for Christmas is You’. The video which won best viral campaign, has been viewed by almost a quarter of a million people worldwide, since its launch last Christmas.

The DANI Awards categories focussed on both the creative and business aspects of digital media and included awards for:

  • best online strategy
  • best web design,
  • best use of social media by large and small enterprises
  • best B2B and B2C campaigns.
  • best mobile app

There was also a special award for digital businessperson of the year, won by Russell Moore from Think RLA.

Professor Maurice Mulvenna, one of the team responsible for the design and delivery of the University of Ulster’s new Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Media Communication and a member of the DANI Judging Panel commented, “Over 200 digital media professionals in this rapidly growing area of business in Northern Ireland attended the event tonight. Naomh McElhatton and the other organisers and sponsors of DANI Awards should be commended for highlighting all that is great about digital media communication in Northern Ireland.”

It’ s hard to believe that we are now seven weeks into the new Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Media Communication. We have a great bunch of students from across the public, private and not for profit sectors and have been hugely impressed by their enthusiasm and level of engagement in the DMC course so far.

In addition to cross-disciplinary teaching from academics within the School of Communication and the School of Computing and Mathematics, Digital Media Communication students have benefitted from lectures and workshops with industry experts including Paul Mc Keever from Front, and Ruairi McNally from Blue Cube Interactive. Liz Creagh of James Nicholson Wines generously gave some time to help with the development of a case study, which was further enhanced by Barry Adams of Pierce Communications, who chatted to students about the development and optimisation of the James Nicholson e-commerce site Jnwine.com.

Whilst students are busily preparing for their first set of assessments, we are currently investigating a suitable venue for the Digital Media Communication big night out on December 15th…

We have been getting lots of enquiries relating to the dates/times for the new Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Media Communication. The details listed below are still preliminary and may be subject to change – but hopefully not! We will, of course, keep you updated should any changes occur.

You’ll notice from the dates below that on-campus teaching takes places on Wednesdays and Thursdays only. However, one very important, additional date is Tuesday 20th September. This when induction and registration for new students takes place. It’s pretty much an all day event. If you have any questions about this, or any other aspect of the course, post a comment or email us directly dmc@ulster.ac.uk

A unique feature of the new Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Media Communication is its multidisciplinary approach. Each module on the course has been designed and is delivered by a team of academics and professional practitioners from both marketing communication and ICT.  The result is a course that is especially tailored to suit graduates and professionals from either background. We firmly believe that in order to achieve sustainable business value in a networked economy that cross-functional teams are essential. Clearly we aren’t the only ones – check out this article by technology consultant and author, Graham Oakes.
