University of Ulster: Bicycle Users Group

Welcome to the University of Ulster Bicycle Users Group

We are a group of cyclists on the Coleraine Campus who have come together to improve facilities for cyclists. We would like to see :

  • High quality cycle parking - well lit, secure, and close to building entrances.
  • Better access to the campus for cyclists - cycle lanes and signs.
  • Showers and lockers

North West Cycle Users Group (NWCUG)

The NWCUG is  a forum for cyclists in the Coleraine area. They are meeting on Monday 27 June 2005 at 7.30pm in the Guide Hall in the car park behind Terrace Row Presbyterian Church, Coleraine. More details are available from  Ian Murray .

Cycle Storage

The results of the questionnaire showed that the main issue for most cyclist was the provision of secure, covered bike racks close to where they work. The following sites for bike racks has been proposed

  • Tower
    • to the right of the steps, not the current location under the
      steps.
    • at the rear entrance coming in from the South Building.
  • L Block - replace the current racks.
  • South Building - replace the current racks at the side and put up a shelter
at the rear entrance where there are currently always bikes tied up.
  • Science/CMB - in front of the Coastal Science building - use an island
    beside the car park.
  • Sports Centre - racks/lean to along the wall at the entrance to the Sports
Centre (beside the parking pay station).
  • Students Union - at front entrance, near the bus stop.
  • Residences - replace the current disgraceful corrugated iron shack.

Mervyn Wately  (Physical Resources) is responsible for the purchase and installation of bike racks, so please contact him with your thoughts.

Cycling can improve your figure and your bank balance

The introduction of parking fees at the University may have prompted you to get out your old bike, but cycling to work can improve more than your bank balance

  • cycling is a great form of exercise, it provides an excellent aerobic workout without putting too much pressure on joints
  • a brisk 20 minute cycle  twice a day can burn  up to 2000 calories per week . This equates to losing over 1/2 lb every week
  •  cycling just 20 miles per week halves the risk of heart attack. ( British Medical Association)
  •  regular cyclists are as fit as non-cyclists ten years younger.
