Students’ Union

Most of the Union facilities are in the South Building, adjacent to the Sports Centre. The Union General Foyer is an open plan area surrounded by services and overlooked by a first-floor gallery. The Foyer accommodates the Union Shop, Travel Shop and photocopying facilities. The gallery above provides a coffee bar, a hairdressing salon, the Student Housing Association (SHAC) office and a general recreation area. The gallery overlooks the Biko Hall, which is a large hall shared with the Sports Centre.

Downstairs, there are the Lounge Bar and the Triangle disco bar, which form the principal venue for on-campus entertainment. There is usually something on every week night during semesters.

The Union administration and offices are to the rear of the foyer, and include the General Office, Welfare Office and Clubs and Societies Office. These are open to students for all enquiries.

Sport

The campus offers a wide range of high-quality facilities for sport and recreation. The Sports Centre has a medium-sized sports hall and an adjoining minor hall, which are used for basketball, indoor tennis, indoor hockey, martial arts, netball, table-tennis, badminton, fencing, and fitness training. It also includes four squash courts, a modern fitness suite, a solarium and a steam room.

The playing fields are close to the Residences and are served by a spacious pavilion. They provide a training area for athletics; pitches for camogie, gaelic football, hockey, hurling, rugby, soccer and tennis courts. Some pitches are floodlit, enabling matches and practice to take place in the evenings. The carefully planned cross-country course, which takes advantage of many excellent natural features, has been used to host the World Student Cross-Country Championships as well as other local competitions. Rowing, sailing, canoeing, sub-aqua and water skiing are centred in the Water Sports Centre, on the banks of the River Bann.
