Senior Common Room The Senior Common Room (SCR) is a private member's social club open to all members of staff and postgraduate students of the University of Ulster. Membership costs £10 a year for part-time staff and postgraduate students and £30 a year for full-time staff. The SCR is run by a management committee elected annually by the members at the AGM. Most importantly, however, the SCR is a members club and all comments and suggestions from our members are gratefully welcomed via our Suggestion Box or contact emails. The SCR is normally open from Monday to Friday 8.45am to 8.00pm and provides a comfortable atmosphere for lunch and tea breaks, as well as meetings, celebrations or even a quiet spot to do a bit of reading. Alcoholic drinks are served after 11.30am from our fully stocked bar which features a wide selection of spirits and beers, as well as a rotating cast of guest ales. In addition we offer a selection of sandwiches and snacks, tea and coffee and our famous garlic or chilli stuffed olives, and stuffed vine leaves! The SCR has both smoking and non-smoking areas. Some of the rooms in the SCR may be used for private functions and parties, contact Le Roy Dowey if you have any queries. We can also arrange to open after 8.00pm if required for a function or party. Member's guests are always welcome in the club, only requiring to be signed in, and regular guests are encouraged to apply for membership themselves.
For many, the highlight of the month in the SCR are our legendary Last Thursday events (oddly enough, on the last Thursday of the month!) - timed to coincide with payday, past events have included Sumo Night, 80's Icons Evening, A Night At The Races and our free food extravaganza Stuff You Night. Last Thursday events feature a Happy Hour to get things started and often a disco/karoke allowing our staff and postgraduate members to enjoy themselves into the wee hours! The 2006/07 year should prove to be a busy one in the SCR with Live Traditional Irish Music on the second Wednesday of each month, our SCR Quiz League each Thursday evening (open to all members, are you really as smart as you think you are?) and the launch of our bi-monthly Movie Night on the first and third Monday of each month. And don't forget our extended Happy Hour each and every Friday evening from 4.30pm, allowing you to sit back and relax and bring in the weekend after a hard weeks work!
