Health Service
The
Student Health Service is situated in Student Services on Level One of the
Tower. Once you register with the University physicians, you have access
to a full family doctor service, with access to specialist and hospital
facilities. A qualified nurse is available to treat injuries and general
illnesses and to advise on preventive health matters.
Chaplaincy
Chaplains serving each campus can be contacted through the Chaplaincy website.
Crèche and Playgroup Facilities
The Nursery Welfare Association organizes a crèche and playgroup for
children (aged from one month to five years) of students and staff. There
are ten sessions each week - Monday to Friday, morning and afternoon -
except on days when the University is normally closed. The morning session
is from 8.30am to 12.30pm. The afternoon session is from 1.00pm to
5.00pm 4.30pm on Fridays.
Arts matters
Two
halls, the Octagon (a 500 seat recital room) and the Diamond (a 1200 seat
concert hall) are located here. Jewel in the crown, however, is the
prestigious Riverside Theatre, which is the third-largest professional
theatre in Northern Ireland. The Riverside was opened in 1976, and is
architecturally unique in Ireland for its flexible staging facilities. The
theatre won a design award in the year of its completion, and another
shortly after for its provision for disabled patrons. It is an established
touring venue, featuring productions from Ireland, Great Britain, Europe
and America. The Riverside programme incorporates drama, music recitals,
rock bands, contemporary dance, ballet, opera, variety, children's shows,
pantomimes and recordings for television and radio. The Theatre is used to
stage student productions, giving you a chance to be involved in a
professional environment. The Theatre’s foyer art gallery hosts regular
touring and locally produced exhibitions. The Riverview Lounge is the
venue for a variety of studio events, workshops and demonstrations.
Student involvement in the arts is especially encouraged. The Theatre
is also used by the School of Media and Performing Art for productions and
teaching. Students and staff are also involved in local amateur drama and
musical societies, which contribute to the Riverside’s eclectic annual
programme.
