spanish steps and flamenco rhythms

The University and the Classical Music Society joined forces to bring an exciting series of arts anSpanish Guitard music events to the North West. The Magee campus was the setting for a series of Guitar Plus Concerts, featuring some of the finest six-string talent ever seen in the city.

The series got off to a high profile start with a sell-out performance by the legendary Juan Martin. Martin is a celebrated virtuoso of the flamenco guitar and plaudits have been heaped upon him. He was voted one of the top three guitarists in the world by US magazine Guitar Player and named “Doctor Flamenco” by The Times. For this concert he was joined by his highly acclaimed ensemble including the Spanish national dance prize winner Raquel de Luna, Antonia Aparecida who is a singer of raw intensity and emotion, and the magnificent footwork of Salvador Moreno ‘El Tigre’.

digital archive

The South Library at Coleraine became one of six sites at which the public have free access to Northern Ireland’s audiovisual heritage.

Using specially networked PC workstations, films and programmes held in digital form can now be accessed. The archive ranges from the Lumiére Brothers’ 1897 actuality films of Belfast to more modern material, such a young Liam Neeson performing in a local play.

The archive is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, through the Northern Ireland Film Commission in association with the British Institute.
