'the gathering'

The University, the Waterside Development Trust and the Verbal Arts Centre teamed up to launch an exciting new literary festival for North West audiences.

The ‘The Gathering’ festival featured readings, book launches, book-making workshops, concerts and exhibitions, plus some of the finest artistic talent ever seen in the city.

The programme featured John Hegley, one of the UK’s most exciting comic poets, the musical talents of Cahal Hayden and Martin O’Connor, best-selling author Pete McCarthy and the highly entertaining views of Owen Dudley Edwards speaking on Sherlock Holmes.

This area has long been associated with a strong literary tradition and I am delighted that Magee can play a part in bringing a new literary festival to local audiences.

Festival of printmaking
David Barker, Senior Lecturer, School of Art and Design was nominated by the Muban Foundation, London, to represent the United Kingdom at the Festival of prints’ held the city of Chong Qing in south- eastern China.

Visually Stunning
The screening of Martin Scorcese’s Kundun marked the visit of the Dalai Lama to Belfast. Kundun is described as the ‘most visually stunning religious storybook ever filmed’ and is a glittering historical account of the early life of the present Dalai Lama.

The University’s annual film event saw an exciting combination of events.

These included screenings, discussions and workshops organised in partnership with a range of agencies including Amnesty International, the One World Centre, Foyle Film Festival and Cinemagic. The programme was launched with the screening of Deepa Mehta’s remarkable film, Earth on 21 September in Queen’s Film Theatre.
