RESEARCH, TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER and REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
rehabilitation services
Clinical research in Rehabilitation Sciences, led by
Professor Deirdre Walsh,
was boosted through the award of funding from, among others, the Wellcome
Trust to work with Musgrave Park Hospital (Green Park Trust) on the use of
specific physiotherapy echniques on children with cerebral palsy and an
award from the Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke Association for
work on the use of oxygen therapy for patients with chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease.
therapeutic
opportunities
In Radiation Science, the work of Professor David
Hirst and Dr Tracy Robson led to exciting new therapeutic possibilities in
the area of gene therapy. Supported strongly by the Cancer Research
Campaign, Ulster Cancer Foundation and Action Cancer, this work
exemplifies excellent research carried out within Northern Ireland’s that
has the potential to bring real hope to patients with cancer.
a
faster, better, cheaper
internet
A joint research programme between
the University and Queen’s University, Belfast resulted in a revolutionary
new technology that could cut the cost of internet access.
A
team headed by Professor Gerard Parr and QUB’s Professor Alan Marshall
have developed what they call a ‘mobile intelligent agent’ which will find
internet users the most reliable connection at the best price available.
Professor Parr says:
“Just as a travel agent scours the world for the best holiday or flight
deal, the new software tool will act as a broker between the computer
application and the global networks that offer internet services, finding
the best service provider at the best price.”
