Brian completed a Foundation course at Magee, and a BA in English at Coleraine, graduating in 1974. He also holds an MA in English from the University. At the conferment, the Vice-Chancellor said that Brian was an inspiration to today's students and his life and work had brought great distinction to the University.

radical change

The University undertook a radical change programme in the last year with the re-structuring of the six faculties resulting in a total of twenty-seven schools.A review of central departments was undertaken.

The Director of Human Resources, Ronnie Magee, indicated that change management is inevitable given the focus on growth and continuous quality improvement. He said: “It is the role of Human Resources to contribute to the success and development of the University as a world-class, high quality institution through the development and implementation of policies, programmes and strategies aimed at enhancing individual and organisational effectiveness, whilst optimising the use and investment of the salary pound.”

The HE sector in general is increasingly becoming highly competitive and the academic labour market is truly global. This year the University administered over 500 recruitment competitions, resulting in the processing of approximately 20,000 application forms, against a raft of employment legislation from Europe,  the UK and NI.

Recognition for engineers
Professor John Anderson has been recognised through the award of one of only twelve UK National Business Fellowship Awards. Professor Anderson was also recognized by the Royal College of Physicians. The Royal College considers a small number of applications across the UK from scientists and engineers who have made a significant contribution to the field of applied medicine.

Professor Alastair Adair received the International Real Estate Society Achievement Award at the first World Congress of IRES held in Alaska in July 2001.

Family-friendly
The University agreed a suite of family-friendly policies with the Trade Unions, including parental leave. The HR Database continued to be refined and updated, offering staff information and improved links to the finance system. This has resulted in a significant improvement in the quality and type of information available to management at all levels to make informed decisions.

A new Health and Safety Management Committee structure, including a Health and Safety Consultative Forum involving the recognised Trade Unions was implemented, Significant decisions have already been taken, such as the recruitment of a Fire and Safety Officer and an independent audit of the University’s health and safety management system.
