PROFILE people
At the outset of 2001 the University introduced a new Health and Safety Management Committee structure, including a Health and Safety Consultative Forum involving the recognised Trade Unions; this committee structure is in its infancy but already significant decisions have been taken, such as the recruitment of a Fire and Safety Officer and an independent audit of the University's health and safety management system. Further refinement and changes to the Health and Safety Management structure in the University are anticipated, given the radical proposals from Government and the Health and Safety Commission/Executive, together with legislative changes and the publication of the Universities Safety Association's Code of Practice. The University drafted its Equality Scheme in accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1999, required under the terms of the Act. For the purposes of the Act the University was designated as a public authority. In accordance with the Act, the Scheme was issued for consultation to a wide range of representative bodies. The University has been working as part of a consortium with Queen's University Belfast, the Open University, St Mary's College, and Stranmillis College to design and implement a training programme for staff in the five organisations.
