VICE-CHANCELLOR’S FOREWORD
Lifelong learning
The concept of lifelong learning continues to receive wide coverage and
discussion in the university sector and further afield. Conscious of our
Mission and our role in society, we are determined to continue our role in
providing access to education to all those who are in a position to
benefit from it. We have a critical role to play in educating our
workforce for the betterment of the local economy if lifelong learning is
to become a reality rather than a piece of rhetoric.
In the last review I referred to our e-shaped future
and the increasing prevalence of new media as communications and delivery
channels for education. I am please to report the launch of our e-learning
initiative, Campus One, which is dedicated to delivering the University’s
course online globally. Dubbed ‘the University at your fingertips’ it has
already been highly successful in attracting students and establishing
partnerships and it represents a very positive and exciting future for the
University.
Working relationships
The University continued its good working relationship with the new
political structures in Northern Ireland, and in particular we worked
closely with the Department for Employment and Learning and the Department
of Enterprise Trade and Investment. We were pleased during the year to
host a number of local ministers, as well as Northern Ireland Secretary of
State, Dr John Reid, President of the Republic of Ireland, Mrs Mary
McAleese and UNESCO Director General Mr Koïchi Matsuura.
A memorable year
It has been a memorable year for the University. We have
repeatedly demonstrated our excellence as a leading regional university,
achieving high standards in teaching, research and technology and
knowledge transfer. We have demonstrated why the Sunday Times recently
shortlisted us for the title of UK University of the Year. The fact that
each of our four campuses and our dedicated staff have contributed fully
to the success is deeply gratifying.

Professor Gerry McKenna
Vice-Chancellor and President
