PROGRAMME REVISION

Revisions to programmes of study are processed by the Academic Office, following Faculty approval.  The following procedures apply.

Where it is proposed to revise structure, content or regulations, and where these revisions do not have substantial implications for resources or the overall curriculum, details are submitted to the Faculty for consideration and approval.  Form CA3 is used.  Faculty procedures for consideration of revisions should include appropriate scrutiny at faculty level, under the auspices of the Faculty teaching and learning committee.

The form  is forwarded to the Academic Office following approval.  CASC is informed of the Faculty's approval.  Copies are sent as appropriate to  Information Services, Physical Resources, the Module Office and Student Marketing.  The revisions are filed in the course file held by the Academic Office.

Proposed changes to title, and aims and objectives require consideration by CASC before final approval is given.  Departures from University regulations are considered by the Teaching and Learning Committee.  Revisions to title, location, mode of attendance, or those which have implications for central resources, eg additional specialist accommodation, are considered by Academic Planning Sub-Committee.  Proposals to offer courses by e-learning are received by APSC.  If a Faculty proposes to deliver an existing course or part of a course, in a [fully] online capacity, or to make significant changes to content or structure of existing fully online modules, the Faculty must engage with Access and Distributed Learning and the CA3 form must be accompanied by a completed e-Learning Resource Agreement.  No online modules are permitted at Year1 in full-time campus-based courses as this usually requires significant support for learning technologists and other staff.

Faculties are encouraged to submit CA3 forms to the Academic Office by the following dates.

         Semester 1 modules - 31 March (or 31 July for changes arising from recommendations of external examiners or retirement of staff);

         Semester 2 modules - 31 October;

         Semester 3 modules - 30 April.

 Later forms are accepted for the following:

  • changes arising from the unexpected illness of a member of staff - as necessary;

  • changes to coursework / examination weighting or to the content of a module, which have been recommended by the external examiner - not later than one month prior to the start of the semester for Semester 1 and Semester 2 modules, or by 14 June for Semester 3 modules;

  • changes to module coordinators and amendments to programmes recently evaluated with changes being phased in on a yearly basis may be notified directly to the Module Office - up to one month before the start of the relevant semester.

The section of the CA3 form entitled "rationale for changes" should be used to record the reason for the late submission.

These deadlines are set for the efficient implementation of changes. CA3 forms submitted later will be processed in the order of receipt and may not be fully accommodated before the start of the module. Faculties may set earlier deadlines to take account of their internal procedures.

Where the revisions are so substantial that the course should be evaluated as if it were a new proposal, or where a new course or Honours subject strand derives substantially from existing provision, a Form CA1 or Form CA2 is submitted.
